Last week...

The last week of term!

This week has been fabulous, we have done so much: we started the week with a massive heat wave and all the children coped FANtastically!  Yesterday we had a special assembly to say goodbye to Mrs. Gaynor, where each year group sang a different song for her (ours was Cool and The Gang - Celebrate) following this we had the inter house Unihoc well done to Leighla, Fabian, Nathan they did an amazing job representing their houses. Today we had our celebration assembly where we recognised the many achievements of children across the whole school! Congratulations to those who received a certificate or prize! Our class won the sunflower competition with our incredible, giant sunflower which grew to 164cm tall! Zach make sure you take care of it throughout the summer!  We also completed our felt phone cases and watched the movie Holes (our class book).

I would just like to say that you are a special bunch of children and I will miss you loads! Enjoy the summer and all the best for year 6 don't forget to work hard!

Miss Scarlett

15.07.22

This week we were lucky enough to get to watch the year 6 production on Monday and it was FANTASTIC! Well done year 6! Tuesday was sports day and everyone took part and tried their best! Congratulations to Pine who came in first place and received Marcus Rashford's new book as a prize! On Thursday we went on our Geography and History trip to Longbridge, where we completed a shop count, asked survey questions to members of the public, we visited Austin Park and looked at the historical timeline of the famous car factory. We all had lots of fun as you can see from the pictures! After we came back we recorded our results from our survey and shop count as a class ready to draw our graphs next week and present our data in our books.

Today we looked at the life cycle of asexual plants including potatoes and ferns.

08.07.22

Another action-packed week in 5S! On Monday we practised for our Unihoc competition, which will take place on Monday 18th July, and we have now selected our house teams! We had a treat of an afternoon on Tuesday when we joined year 4 in the hall to watch Shrek for a special Broadmeadow cinema experience. On Wednesday, we had transition morning, where everyone got to meet their new teachers! 5S got to meet their new 6 teacher, Miss. Drennan, who was super excited to meet her new class before September! Yesterday we started to cut our felt in preparation to start sewing our phone cases together at some point next week! And today we drew observational pictures of real-life plants!

Don't forget that next Tuesday is Sports Day and next Thursday is our Geography/History trip to Longbridge, so we need all permission slips back for those who are attending by Wednesday 13th July.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, and enjoy the sun! :)

01.07.22

How time flies, its July already! With only 3 weeks left to go... We have had another great week here in 5S, we have worked hard to complete our assessments and we are finally all done. Well done 5S!

We mixed it up a little on Thursday and became 5SB as some of year 5 were selected to go and represent Broadmeadow at Tudor Grange in an athletics competition. Those of us who stayed in school joined forces for a team building activities day and we had a great time!  Today we have made our templates for our DT project ready to cut these out of felt next week and start sewing!  congratulations to Lilly-Rose and Jessica on their hard work certificates this week!

24.06.22

We have been practising our sewing skills ready for our DT project of making phone cases - don't forget you need to bring your measurements in for next week's lesson. We also practised for a sports event that some of the children will be attending next Thursday at Tudor Grange! We have nearly finished the write up of our Yellow-spotted lizard non-chronological report and they are looking amazing so far! In assembly we celebrated Cara V and Blake for their good work this week. Well done both!

It is school photograph day on Monday so please ensure you are in full school uniform and you bring your best smiles :)

Enjoy the weekend!

Miss Scarlett :)

17.06.22

This week we started our new DT project - felt phone/tablet cases we researched current cases, decided on our design criteria and drew out some of our initial ideas. We are all really excited to get making them, the homework task for this week was to take measurements of our devices, which we will need to successfully design and make our cases later on this term. In English we are continuing to write our non-chronological reports on the Yellow-spotted lizard We drew our own yellow spotted lizard pictures to include in our report which are fantastic! Lilly-Rose even found a real-life lizard in her pond this week and brought in a picture for us all to see! I can't wait to see our finished pieces this week as we have been working so hard, collecting information on reptiles to make us sound like experts!

We have had a real push on presentation this week with some beautifully presented pieces of work, which we acknowledged in our celebration assembly on Friday - congratulations Zaynah and Nathan on your good work certificates!

10.06.22

We have had an amazing first week back this term, we have started to have whole school assemblies again kicking off with an assembly on Monday about change and it being positive, Tuesday was singing assembly - we were a bit rusty but we are starting to warm up our vocal chords. Fridays assembly was our celebration assembly well done to Riley and Savannah on their good work certificates. We have started research for our DT topic this term where we will be making a phone or tablet case out of felt, in English we have moved on to writing our non-chronological reports about Yellow-Spotted lizards inspired by our class book Holes! We have worked very hard in Maths to find missing angles around a point and on a straight line.

Have a nice weekend - enjoy the sun!

Miss Scarlett.

27.05.22

What an amazing week we have had at BMJ! This week has been filled with fun activities to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. We had a whole school assembly on Monday where we learnt about why this Jubilee is so special. On Thursday we decorated commemorative plates, on Friday we had a special singing assembly and we shared a picnic with infants on the school field. 5S had lots of fun playing games with one of the reception classes. All children have been sent home with their clay sculptures, commemorative plates and a commemorative coin, jubilee book and bookmark.

Have a great half term all - enjoy the weather!

20.05.22

Another fantastic week in 5S -  we have been channeling our inner artists and  practising our clay sculpture skills ready to produce our final product next week! Take a look at our designs so far, which will be coming home on Monday,  when they are all dry!

A letter has been sent home today about our fun filled week next week!

Don't forget to give the art competition a go over the weekend 5S ready to bring in your completed pieces on Tuesday 24th of May, for them to be entered into the competition.

Have a super weekend!

13.05.22

This week we have started our line of enquiry for our new geography topic Longbridge - we have talked about Birmingham and our locality and discussed the different land uses within Birmingham. We have come up with some fantastic questions that we would like to know the answers to by the end of this unit. We have also started our new art unit - sculptures! we researched some famous artists and we are looking forward to designing and making our own sculptures out of clay in the coming weeks.

Have a fantastic weekend all :)

06.05.22

This has been a short but sweet week at school. We have investigated how the moon gets its craters and we had some fun with this and carried out an experiment to see if the height of the drop would affect the size of the crater! We talked about fair testing and we tried to ensure that we were working scientifically focusing on taking accurate measurements. I was really impressed with the teamwork displayed in 5S!

Have a great weekend all! See you Monday.

Miss Scarlett.

29.04.22

Welcome back to the summer term! We had a great first week back, this week winners were chosen for the Easter egg competition ( Congratulations to Lexi who was the winner from 5S! with her eggcellent eggsam model.)

We have worked hard to understand decimals this week and have flown through the questions! We have been looking at the book "Interview with a Tiger" and will be working towards writing up our interviews for a chosen animal next week.

Please don't forget it is a three day week for year 5 next week, we have Bank holiday Monday and Thursday off for polling.

Enjoy your long weekend.

Miss. Scarlett :)

07.4.22

This week we have been looking at the human geography of Mexico. We have been talking about our favourite Mexican foods from Elotes to Tacos! We researched Mexican culture and looked more specifically into Mexican sports, music and dance. So of course, we played la cucaracha and other Mariachi band music whilst we worked!

We have had a fantastic last week at school for the spring term! I hope you all enjoy the half term and have a great Easter!

Miss. Scarlett :)

smiley We have sunflowers!

We have been carefully taking care of our sunflowers since we planted them in British Science Week and we have had some fantastic results this week our tallest is standing at 7cm tall!

We have also looked at the Physical Geography of Mexico this week which has made us all very jealous as we looked outside at the snow!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Yet another great week this week! 25.03.22

This week was Shakespeare week, so it was only right that we researched him and read one of his plays Macbeth! We wrote in the style of one of his poems Double, double toil and trouble; and we produced some fantastic versions of our own!

For science this week we explored the way the planets move in relation to the sun. For this we went outside and re-enacted the planets orbiting the sun.

It also looks like we have some tiny little sprouts for our sunflowers that we planted last week! Hopefully these will grow a bit bigger over the weekend!

Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the sun!

Science Week! 18.03.22

This week we have been celebrating British Science Week: this year the theme is  'GROWTH'.

There is a school competition taking place to see which class can grow the tallest sunflower! So this week we carefully planted our seeds (fingers crossed that we manage to grow the tallest sunflower in BMJ!).

Don't forget the British Science Week poster competition (hand in by April 1st) and Science Week quizzes should be returned by Tuesday!

Please can you also remember to bring your homework books back in for Spring 2's homework!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Miss. Scarlett.

Hola,

This week has been great! We finally finished our class book and have written our book reviews, as well as starting to write our how to care guide for a house with chicken legs. Our maths focus for this week was adding and subtracting fractions! We have researched Mexico in our Geography lessons and found out some very interesting facts: did you know that Mexico is home to the worlds widest tree? In Science we researched the planets and made a fact file or informational poster on the Solar system!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

04.03.22

It has been a great start back to school this week! We celebrated world book week and the children participated in a number of activities across the week. They were able to bring their old books in to participate in a book swap where they were able to exchange these for new books to read. Of course we all participated in World Book Day by dressing as our favourite book characters, the children were able to show off their fabulous costumes in the parade on Thursday afternoon. Finally, to round off such a fantastic week: we had a visit from famous author and comedian Ian Billings, who performed a live comedy show for us in the hall this afternoon. He had all of the children (and adults) laughing!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Miss Scarlett

This week we have been Learning about Maya Angelou: we tried to write a Poem in the style of one of her most famous poems "Life Doesn't Frighten Me". These poems were so fantastic I decided we needed to pull our favourite lines together and make a whole class poem!

We also tasted Mayan Hot Chocolate! The children had the choice of Chili or Cinnamon to add to their drink. (only a few brave enough to try the Chilli) I wonder if can you tell who they are by their faces in the pictures we took!

Have a great half term  5S and I will see you next week! :)

18.02.22

04.02.22

This week we had a "No Pens Day" which all of the children loved. We were able to explore fractions in our maths lesson by playing games and solving puzzles which helped us gain a better understanding of equivalent fractions ahead of next week. For our English lesson, the children were able to get into the role of Marinka once again and in pairs, they were talking to their diaries (their partners). We had a great laugh doing this as there are some fantastic acting skills within 5S!

Again 5S please keep pushing with the TT Rockstars competition; remember it only counts if you're doing it between 7 am and 7 pm.

Have a fantastic weekend all!

28.01.22

This week we have focused on getting into the role of Marinka (the main character from our class book). We mixed our English lesson with some drama and acted out scenarios from the book - with some fantastic acting skills within 5S! We then looked at some of the decisions the character had make and should make in the future to help us understand Marinka ready to start writing diary entries from her perspective next week.

We will be making our own House with Chicken Legs after half term so please if you can save any tubes and boxes from being recycled and bring those in for the children to make their own house.

We won our last round of the battle of the band which is absolutely amazing well done 5S! Please continue to play over the weekend so that we can keep up our winning streak we can do this :D

Have a great weekend!

21.01.22

This week we have focused on our multiplication skills and have progressed on to two by two-digit multiplication which we will continue next week before moving on to division. In our English lessons we have drafted our Borsch recipes ready to write these up in best next week, we will then to move on to the next part of our The House With Chicken Legs literacy focus on Tuesday which should be fun!

We were really close in the TT Rockstar’s battle of the bands last week, but unfortunately 6H won the first round. However, from looking at the leader board this week I think we have a good chance of winning our next round and I am excited to see the scores when we get back into school on Monday. Remember that the participation times are from 7am to 7pm so keep going and let’s boost our score even more!

Have a great weekend

Miss Scarlett

Food Tasting!

On Monday we tried Borscht  - a traditional beetroot soup from Russia. The recipe is made by one of the main characters in our new class book, The House With Chicken Legs. In preparation for writing our own recipe next week  we taste tested the traditional Russian soup. Some of us enjoyed it more than others but, we all agreed that it knowing what Borscht tasted like would help us a lot when it comes to writing our recipe next week.

A couple of reminders:

PE is on Tuesday - please ensure you come to school in PE kit (a white T-shirt, black tracksuit trousers.)

There is an inter-school battle of the bands on TT Rockstars everyone should have their logins now and hopefully, 5S can boost our score over the weekend and we will win our first round!

Homework books and new homework grids will be sent out on Monday . Children may bring homework in each week throughout the half term or in one go by the hand-in date. In addition to the homework grid, children should also be reading and practising times tables and spellings each week at home.

Borsch Tasting!

Another busy week saw the children starting their final pieces of art based on samba music and creating their own depiction of this image.  Look out for their completed pieces next week!

In Maths they consolidated their understanding of written division and have been converting between units of measurement.

The children have completed their poetry unit by developing their use of vocabulary / phrases for effect while writing their own poems, replicating the structures within The Hiighwayman.

There have been a few assessments within their week too, which the children have shown real focus and determination in completing.  Well done to everyone - enjoy a well earned rest this weekend!

We Three Kings Christmas Carol

The class have started practising this version of We Three Kings for their Christmas performance. Please encourage them to practise at home too!

It has been quite a week of change in 5G this week with Mr Johnston and Mr Shennan teaching the class.  We have both really enjoyed working with all the children and look forward to getting know them even more in the coming weeks.  It really is such a pleasure being able to teach a class full of children who are all so brilliant in their own unique ways.

This week has seen the children working on division, using different representations to help develop their conceptual understanding before linking these to using the bus stop method.  The image below will give you an idea of how they have been approaching the division.

In English, we have been examining The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43187/the-highwayman

The children have worked hard decoding all of the language, identifying poetic devices, plotting the story and acting it out in groups. Next week we will be writing poetry using structures from The Highwayman to guide us but basing it on our class reader The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie.

PE Kit

Please note that PE will now be on a Tuesday (their swimming lessons have now finished) so they need to come into school in their PE kit on Tuesdays.

Goodbye 5G! 🌈🥰

Thank you to everyone who was part of making my last day at Broadmeadow so special. I will truly miss you all - I will miss teaching you and spending our days together. You’ve given me so many wonderful memories and I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to be your teacher.
Good luck 5G - keep being the stars that you are and carry on shining ⭐️💫

12.11.21

Another fantastic week! In DT, we started our new project of making bridges! I was so impressed with your initial ideas and your innovation as you were challenged with building the tallest bridge using only paper and linking cubes! I was also so proud of how much progress you’ve all made in Maths. By the end of the week, you were so much more confident with multiplication! I’m looking forward to next week for another week full of learning and fun! 😊

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Welcome back 5G!

What a lovely first week back! I was so happy to see all of your smiling faces. 😊

In English this week, we started exploring the fantasy genre and its features. Today, I was enthralled by your enchanting setting descriptions! I’m so excited to see what you magic up next week! This week, we also finished our class book, The Boy At the Back of the Class. Reading the ending, where Ahmet’s family were found because of his friends’ desperate efforts, was met with a huge applause and even a few tears!

A huge well done to all of the children who completed their homework tasks before half term - the quality of work produced was outstanding!! I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll produce with your new set of tasks! ⭐️

Have a fantastic weekend 5G!

Miss Gordon

Happy Half Term!

You’ve all worked so hard this week! This week in English, you wowed me with your persuasive skills when reading your letters to the Prime Minister. Similarly, the effort you showed me in Maths when learning about different charts, tables and graphs was quite literally, off the chart!

Have a great half term 5G! I’m looking forward to seeing you all when we return! 😊

Fantastic Friday!

In 5G, we have been collecting marbles for our marble jar. We pop a marble in the jar when we’re displaying excellent behaviour as a class and last week, we filled it to the very top! 😁 We ended a great week on such a high as we enjoyed our class treat - delicious hot chocolate and cookies! ☕️🍪

Have a lovely weekend! 😊

Miss Gordon

Another fantastic week in 5G!

In English this week, we started to look at persuasive writing. We had the opportunity to put the persuasive techniques we’ve been learning about to use in a class debate about whether or not to ban school uniform! I was so impressed with how considered and well-explained your speeches were! Maybe we have some future politicians or lawyers in the classroom?

In Maths, we have been subtracting two 4-digit numbers with more than one exchange. I am so proud of how much progress you’ve all made throughout the week. You’ve all worked incredibly hard this week and have thoroughly earned a rest this weekend!

See you all on Monday 😊

1.10.21

Wow - what a week! In English, we have been writing diary entries based on the shocking moment Brendan-the-Bully stole Ahmet’s pomegranate! To really get into character, we re-imagined how that scene would have unfolded. I must say, I think we have a few future performers in the class! 🎭 We also got to try the very fruit which Ahmet was so upset about losing!

We finished the week with a fun experiment in Science - we tested a range of everyday materials to see if they were magnetic or could conduct heat or electricity.

🧲⚡️

I hope you have a lovely weekend 5G! smiley

Miss Gordon

Dramatic Diaries!

This week in English, you imagined you were Ahmet (a character from our class book, The Boy at the Back of the Class) on his first day of school. You captured his experience perfectly in the engaging, reflective diary entries you produced. Here are a few of the many fantastic entries written today…

Amazing Art in 5G!

This week in Art, we explored using hatching and cross hatching techniques. We looked at the artwork of Leonardo da Vinci for inspiration and created a life drawing of our hands! I was so proud of the magnificent masterpieces you produced. Here are a few examples! 🌟

WOW - What a great start to the year! 😁

It has been so lovely being back in school and getting to know all of you! I have been so proud of each and everyone of you this week; you have demonstrated such hardworking, positive attitudes which is reflected in some of the excellent pieces of work you have produced. I was particularly impressed with the thoughtful, reflective diary entries you have written in English.

We ended a fantastic week with everyone in ‘Outstanding’ on our zone board. I hope you’re as proud of yourselves as I am!  🌟

Have a great weekend, refreshed and ready for another happy week! 😊

Miss Gordon

Welcome back 5G! smiley

I hope that you've all had a lovely summer and enjoyed a well earned rest! Mrs Brotherton and I are so excited to see you all and begin a fantastic, fun-filled year!  From Monday, we'll spend lots of time getting to know each other but here are a few things you will need to know about our school week:

The school day will begin at 8.35am and will end at 3.00pm.

From the 15th of September, you will be starting your swimming lessons! Every Wednesday, the coach will collect you from school at 9.00am and will return at 10.30am. Please make sure you bring your swimming kit - this should consist of swimming trunks/ shorts or a swimming costume (not a bikini) and a towel, in a separate bag.

Enjoy the last few days of the summer holiday - I cannot wait to see all of your smiling faces on Monday! smiley
