Art

‘Art is freedom and expression. It allows us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time’.

Intent

At Broadmeadow Junior School, our high-quality Art and Design Curriculum enables pupils to explore a range of medias such as pencil, clay, paint and printing. Through Art and Design, we aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils so that they are able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, crafts and design. Children document their discovery of art and mastery of techniques in sketchbooks through drawing, painting, collage and print.

Art and Design is subjective and children are encouraged to use expression and freedom when critiquing and evaluating artwork.  We see art as a vehicle for creativity and individual expression. It provides children with tactile and sensory experiences, thus allowing them to become involved and inspired. Children research both traditional and contemporary artists which helps to develop an understanding of how Art and Design shapes our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Through our teaching of Art and Design we aim to:

  • Ensure that every child has the opportunity to study Art and Design in order to help them reflect with freedom and creativity.
  • Produce creative work, exploring ideas and recording experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • Develop life skills which will prepare them for secondary school and beyond.
